Instructions:

CURRENT PROVISIONS FOR THE ISSUE OF "VISA ON ARRIVAL" VISAS.

Under the provisions that came into force at the end of September 2022, Italian citizens wishing to stay in Indonesia for less than 30 days (for tourism, official visits or government assignments, business meetings, purchasing of goods, official meetings, or in transit to other destinations) are exempt from the requirement to apply for a visa in advance.

They can obtain a so-called "Visa on Arrival" (e-VOA) at the main points of entry, including Jakarta's "Soekarno Hatta" and Bali's "Ngurah Rai" international airports, or online before departure from the website https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/, provided they have:

  1. a passport with at least 6 (six) months' remaining validity at the time of entry into Indonesia;
  2. a return ticket or a ticket for onward travel out of Indonesia;
  3. payment of IDR 500,000 for the tourist visa (to be paid directly on arrival at the airport).

This visa is valid for 30 days and can be extended for a further 30 days, before it expires, at the nearest Indonesian Immigration Office or online from the website https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/ .

Please refer to the official website of the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration for further information and for the full list of points of entry: https://www.imigrasi.go.id/wna/daftar-negara-voa-bvk-calling-visa/titik-masuk-bagi-pemegang-e-voa?golden_visa=0&all=1

Given the particular strictness of the Indonesian authorities in cases of breaches of immigration regulations, it is advisable in any event to make enquiries in advance with the Indonesian Embassy in Rome (https://kemlu.go.id/rome).

There have been cases in which, once entry had been granted at one of the airports or ports listed above, exit was subsequently refused at a port or airport not included in that list. Travellers entering the country through one of the ports or airports mentioned are therefore advised to plan their itinerary so as to leave the country through one of the designated border points.

The Indonesian authorities have recently stressed that holders of Temporary Passports cannot obtain a visa on entry into the country and must instead obtain a specific visa from the local Indonesian diplomatic mission. Travellers holding such a document are advised to make enquiries with the competent Indonesian Embassies.

Applying for a visa before departure

For all other types of visa, an application is mandatory and must be made at the Indonesian Embassy in Rome or electronically (https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/), following the instructions on the website of the Directorate General of Immigration.

Such visas may be valid for longer (up to 60 days) and are renewable. In particular, a specific entry visa must be issued for journalistic activity (including photography for press articles). In this regard, in addition to the visa itself, it is recommended to request from the Embassy the other ministerial authorisations required for journalistic activity. For this particular activity, moreover, prior personal registration of those concerned with the competent office of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta is always required. For visits to particular regions, such as Papua or Aceh, in addition to the visa it is also necessary to ask the Indonesian Embassy for up-to-date information on obtaining any special permits required for entry into those regions.

Please note that staying longer than the period granted by the visa and/or engaging in activities other than those for which the visa was issued constitute a serious breach of Indonesian immigration law and, as such, are punished with heavy fines and prison sentences of up to five years. For each day of illegal stay in Indonesia, a fine of IDR 1,000,000 is currently payable, in cash.

Please note that only the Indonesian authorities can provide official, up-to-date information on the conditions for entering and staying in Indonesian territory, and they should be contacted for any clarification in this regard and to check whether, and how, an entry visa can be obtained for the type of activity you intend to carry out in Indonesia.
