Documents for travel
United Kingdom
Documents required for entry into the country.
Entry into the United Kingdom, including for airport transit, is permitted ONLY with a passport, valid for at least the entire period of stay in the country. Collective passports are not accepted.
Under British law, as set out in the guidance published by GOV.UK, EU citizens found to be without a passport on entry to the United Kingdom may be turned back at the border.
Italian citizens travelling to the United Kingdom for tourism are exempt from the visa requirement (the so-called Standard Visitor Visa) for stays of up to 6 months.
The British Government is gradually introducing the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) as a travel requirement. The ETA is not technically a visa, but rather an (electronic) authorisation to travel to the United Kingdom, reserved for foreign nationals who are exempt from the visa requirement. The ETA is an authorisation required for short stays.
From 2 April 2025 - with applications open from 5 March 2025 - Italian citizens will nevertheless be required to obtain an ETA before departure for travel to the United Kingdom.
For further information on timings and on the countries covered by the ETA scheme, please refer to the website of the relevant British authorities.
