Travel Documents for Minors

Please note that the registration of a minor on a parent's passport was valid until 26 June 2012. Since that date, a minor may travel within Europe and abroad only with an individual travel document (a passport or, within the EU, an identity card). At the same time, parents' passports bearing the registration of minor children remain valid for the holder alone until the document's natural expiry date. Whenever a child under 14 travels abroad, i.e. outside Italy, unaccompanied by a parent or legal guardian, an accompanying declaration (dichiarazione di accompagno) is required (for further information please refer to the website of the Italian State Police www.poliziadistato.it). Those travelling with dependent minor children, or with minor children registered on their own passport, must check their documentation carefully, including with regard to their marital status. In case of any doubt, and given the constant changes in the regulations governing travel documents, all passengers are invited to consult the website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs  www.viaggiaresicuri.it before departure.

Validity

To ensure greater individual identification and security for minors, the law provides that both passports and identity cards issued to minors have two different validity periods, so that the photograph is kept up to date and the minor can be identified at border controls

• Minors aged 0 to 3: valid for three years

• Minors aged 3 to 18: valid for five years
