  1. to discover 5 countries of Central America

  3. to visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites and incredible natural paradises

The Panama Canal

You cannot leave Panama City without visiting the famous canal, a magnificent ‘short cut’ linking the Atlantic to the Pacific and a spectacular piece of engineering: the huge container ships passing through the locks are as fascinating as the animals of every kind that watch them from the jungle. The two visitor centres have observation platforms and museums illustrating the construction and expansion of the Canal. The Miraflores visitor centre is modern and well laid out, with a cinema showing a short and interesting documentary on the history of the canal, a museum and an observation platform from which you can watch the ships passing just a few metres away.

Costa Rica, the first country in the world without an army, is a small Central American state with around five million inhabitants which differs in many respects from the other countries of Latin America, so much so that it is often called the Switzerland of Central America. The army was abolished in 1948 and the money that would have gone on armaments was redirected to social policies that have produced a literacy rate above 95%, an efficient public health system (the WHO ranks it first in the region and thirty-sixth in the world), a security system that has kept crime at a “moderate” level and a protection of the natural heritage that has seen 30% of the territory designated as national parks. However questionable such rankings may be, in the first decade of the 2000s Costa Rica was ranked the happiest nation in the world on average. It is quite something to read all these positive reviews of a country located in one of the poorest and most dangerous areas of the planet, close to nations such as El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua, where for much of the population the only way to survive is emigration. All of the above, together with a degree of political stability, has in recent years led not only to an exceptional growth in tourism but also to the arrival of many foreigners who have opened businesses in the country. Unfortunately, on closer analysis, Costa Rica can be described as a country that is better off than others in the same area, but there are certainly serious problems in terms of the redistribution of wealth. It is true that GDP has been growing at an average of around 3% for years but, according to the World Bank, in 2019 about a quarter of the population was still living in poverty and 7% in extreme poverty, with an unemployment rate of almost 12%, and much higher among the young.
