Description
The gem. Berlin's Spandauer Vorstadt, a district made to measure.
Spandauer Vorstadt was historically one of the centres of the Jewish community, a poor quarter inhabited mainly by workers from the neighbouring factories and by small craftsmen. Today, after the extensive regeneration of recent years, the district has become the favourite haunt of young night owls and the fashionable crowd. Pubs, trendy bars, avant-garde theatres and arthouse cinemas, as well as art galleries, have turned the district into the stage for the city's nightlife. The dense concentration of buildings in Spandauer Vorstadt is evident not only in its streets but also in the intricate inner courtyards that served both as homes and as workplaces. The most famous example of this kind is the Hackesche Höfe, one of the favourite meeting places for visitors. Eight courtyards that required extensive restoration work, hidden in a labyrinth of houses covering a total area of 10,000 square metres: the largest complex of its kind and one of the finest in all of Europe.
Potsdam, a diamond with many facets.
Take your time to discover the most beautiful spots in Potsdam: compared with Berlin, the city has a great deal to offer! Large parts of the work of art that is Potsdam have been honoured with UNESCO World Heritage status. First and foremost there is the Potsdam of the Prussian monarchs, who left behind magnificent palaces and parks. At its heart is Sanssouci Palace with its English-style gardens, the summer residence of Frederick the Great. Then there is the last palace of the Hohenzollern family, "Cecilienhof" in the Neuer Garten (New Garden). It was here that the Allies reached the Potsdam Agreement in 1945, a major event in European history. Last but not least, there is "Schloss Babelsberg" (Babelsberg Palace) and its park, famous for the magical sightlines of its perfectly designed landscape. Enjoy the finest views over Potsdam's palaces and parks from the lookout towers on the Ruinenberg and Pfingstberg hills and from Babelsberg Park. Another facet of the diamond is the historic city centre. On foot you can discover streets, courtyards, Baroque buildings, imposing churches and an entire "Holländisches Viertel" (Dutch Quarter). Around this area you will find many other "international" sites that reveal something of the open-mindedness for which Potsdam is so famous: the "Russische Kolonie" (Russian Colony) of Alexandrowka, the Bohemian weavers' quarter and the Swiss colonial settlement of "Nattwerder", as well as churches and villas with an Italian touch. Discover Potsdam from a different perspective: Potsdam, the island right in the middle of the River Havel. The river, its lakes and the green, inspiring landscape offer heavenly opportunities for leisure activities and water sports.
