Description
Japan, a mystery that seduces.
The Land of the Rising Sun is a captivating blend of tradition and modernity, where reverence for the past goes hand in hand with a wholehearted embrace of progress and technology. Perhaps no other country has quite the unique, distinctive character of this eastern giant, made up of countless nuances. A walk through the streets of any big city is enough to take in an endless stream of impressions: whole districts devoted to the world of video games or manga, teeming pedestrian crossings that have become icons in their own right, glass-fronted skyscrapers that suddenly give way to immaculately kept parks and traditional gardens sheltering ancient temples, slender pagodas and views of infinite beauty and poetry. This is a fundamental aspect of Japanese culture: enjoying beauty is a gradual, shared process. Perhaps this explains the allure of cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Nara, where aesthetic experiences fill the heart and the eyes with wonder. Strolling alongside the Japanese, it is quite common to see teenagers dressed in the latest fashions mingling with women who still dress traditionally, in elegant, colourful kimonos. Likewise, wandering through the streets of Pontocho in Kyoto, you may come across geishas, those mysterious figures of Japanese literature. Contact with nature is another cornerstone of Japanese culture, tied largely to Shintoism. Every natural event typical of a given season is seen as a symbol of transience, and for that very reason deserves to be celebrated during its brief life. Such is the case with “hanami”, which coincides with the cherry blossom: a period when Japan dresses itself in magnificent colours, from white to every shade of pink. But it is not the only moment of great charm. In autumn and early winter too, although a less well-known and less publicised event, the whole country witnesses the so-called “foliage”: the leaves of the trees take on hues ranging from vermilion red to ochre yellow before falling to the ground, where they form brilliantly coloured, evocative carpets that adorn temples and avenues.
Discovering Japan with full Guiness assistance.
This new 10-day itinerary lets you discover the great classics of Japan, thanks to a programme designed specifically to strike the right balance between guided visits and free time. It is aimed at travellers who love the thrill of discovery and who wish to visit, with the tour leader or on their own, unusual and sometimes lesser-known attractions that nonetheless hold great appeal. Tokyo, Nara and Kyoto, the cities that best represent the many souls of Japan, will also be explored with the invaluable help and support of Italian-speaking local guides, who will provide all the information needed to fully understand the fascinating local culture. In addition, the constant presence of the Guiness tour leader travelling from Italy ensures logistical and technical assistance at every moment, drawing on their knowledge of the destination and suggesting a range of activities to enjoy during free time. The Japan Rail Pass, included in the package price, also guarantees fast, efficient travel between the cities on the itinerary. As always, every service has been carefully selected down to the smallest detail, to guarantee standards of excellence and make the travel experience truly rewarding. In short, Japan at Leisure is a tour which, while departing slightly from a classic Guiness itinerary, retains all the familiar hallmarks that have always shown every traveller “the difference between a trip and a holiday”.
