Why this tour?

  1. to get to know the Land of the Rising Sun as fully as possible
  2. to visit Nikko, a site unlike any other in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  3. to discover Kanazawa, the magic of feudal Japan

Japan, poised as it is between tradition and modernity, holds a very particular fascination for us Westerners. To grasp its true essence, here are a few experiences that will immerse you fully in the culture of the Land of the Rising Sun: attend a matsuri, one of the Japanese festivals (generally Shinto) found in every city in Japan, marking the changing seasons. They are colourful, cheerful festivals involving huge numbers of people. In the cities, stalls selling traditional foods and sweets fill the festive streets with their delicious aromas. See Mount Fuji, no ordinary mountain but the highest peak in Japan at 3,776 metres, which the Japanese consider sacred. A Japanese saying goes: “Whoever climbs Mount Fuji once in their life is wise; whoever climbs it twice is a fool”. Go to a maid café, a place with a fairy-tale atmosphere where the waitresses wear Victorian-style dresses and are there to serve the customer in every way, playing the role of the devoted “maid”, who will not fail to surprise you with a touch of magic. There is also a male version – the Butler Café – where the waiters are there to make the ladies feel like princesses. Go to an onsen, a hot-spring bath that the Japanese often take after a day’s work: the thermal waters have beneficial effects on body and mind. Watch a geisha performance, the embodiment of Japanese beauty and art, who in precious kimonos enchants everyone with elegant, precise gestures in traditional dances, but also in song or simply in pouring tea. Girls who want to become geisha must embark on a long and demanding path from a very young age. Attend a tea ceremony, following an ancient ritual that represents one of the highest aesthetic expressions of Zen. During this ceremony everyone must feel at ease, serene and far from their worries; every movement has a precise purpose and every utensil used must be functional. Go to a neko café (dotted all over Japan) where colonies of cats – clean and vaccinated, naturally – will keep you company while you drink a coffee or eat a slice of cake. It may also be useful to know that, before entering a shrine, ablutions are performed to purify oneself: you rinse your mouth and hands using a ladle at a small fountain right at the entrance. On the wooden tablets at the entrance to Shinto shrines, people usually write messages or thanks addressed to the gods. By leaving an offering you can take a fortune slip. In restaurants you almost always receive a hot, damp towelette (or small towel, depending on the place) to wash your hands. Green tea (lukewarm) is always free and is served straight away, before you order. Water and soft drinks are almost always served with plenty of ice. For us Westerners it is also curious to note that sneezing or blowing your nose in public is considered bad manners.
