Breakfast at the hotel – departure for Paracas along the Pan-American Highway South, which hugs the Pacific coast through breathtaking scenery of sand dunes and mountains – lunch at leisure in Paracas – afternoon visit to the Paracas National Reserve, a vast area of fantastic geological formations shaped over the millennia by wind and water erosion and a place of worship for the pre-Inca culture – dinner at the hotel – evening at leisure – tour leader on hand – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – morning transfer from the hotel to the pier – boarding for the excursion to the Ballestas Islands, 45 minutes off the coast of Paracas, with their astonishing wildlife – departure for Nazca (a 4-hour drive) – lunch at leisure en route – stop at the Huacachina Oasis – view of the Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from an observation tower – dinner at the hotel – evening at leisure – tour leader on hand – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – morning visit to Arequipa (the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Museo Santuarios Andinos with the mummy Juanita; the Plaza de Armas; Arequipa Cathedral; the Church of La Compañía de Jesús of 1590; the Mirador de Carmen Alto overlooking the River Chili; the Monastery of Santa Catalina) – lunch at leisure – afternoon at leisure to relax and/or explore independently – tour leader on hand – dinner at the typical restaurant Chicha – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – departure for the spectacular Colca Valley, a district of dramatic ravines, hills and canyons – we enter the Pampa Cañahuas Reserve, where we may encounter vicuñas (Andean camelids regarded as a national symbol) – we continue via Viscachani and the Pampa de Toccra, skirting the crater of the Chucura volcano to reach the Mirador de los Andes at Patapampa, at 4,890 m, from where the volcanoes can be seen – lunch in a restaurant in the legendary village of Chivay – afternoon at leisure to relax and/or visit the thermal baths – tour leader on hand – dinner at the hotel – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – departure for the Cruz del Cóndor, from where we can admire the Colca Valley, with one of the deepest canyons in the world, over which soar huge, majestic condors, symbol of the Andes – on to visit the villages of Pinchollo, Maca, Achoma and Yanque, then enjoying the views at Antahuilque and Choquetico – lunch in a restaurant en route – departure for Puno, taking the road towards Parahuasi through stone forests and sky-blue lagoons populated by herons at 4,000 m above sea level – after a six-hour journey we arrive in Puno – dinner at the hotel – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – full-day excursion by typical local boat – we begin with a visit to Taquile Island, where the inhabitants still preserve their ancestral traditions and will welcome us in their colourful traditional dress – typical lunch in a restaurant at Luquina – visit to places off the tourist trail and to a quinoa farm – return to Puno, visiting the traditional Uros Islands on the way – dinner at the hotel – evening at leisure – tour leader on hand – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – departure for Cusco (around 10 hours’ actual travelling time) across the spectacular Andean Cordillera, past small villages and herds of llamas and alpacas. Along the way we visit the Pucará Museum and the Temple of Raqchi, built in honour of the god Viracocha (still used as a sanctuary today and a renowned centre of energy), as well as the spectacular church of Andahuaylillas – lunch in a restaurant en route – late-afternoon arrival in Cusco – dinner at the hotel – evening at leisure – tour leader on hand – overnight stay.

Breakfast at the hotel – departure by coach through the magical landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, bound for the little town of Ollantaytambo. Along the way we visit the wonderfully colourful craft market of Chinchero and the Maras salt pans, fed by salt water rising from underground, from which salt was extracted (a commodity bartered for goods from other parts of the Empire) – the village of Ollantaytambo, a great archaeological site and a classic example of Inca town planning, a place of rest and lodging for groups undertaking long journeys – lunch in a restaurant – departure on the tourist train to Aguas Calientes station – dinner at the hotel – overnight stay. N.B. – you need only bring hand luggage with what you consider necessary for one night. Main luggage can be left in storage at the hotel in Cusco.

Breakfast at the hotel – departure for Machu Picchu, “the lost city of the Incas” and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, aboard the buses linking Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the archaeological site – guided tour of the citadel taking in the Main Square, the Royal Apartments, the Temple of the Three Windows and the cemetery – lunch in a restaurant – afternoon return by train to Poroy – on arrival, transfer to the hotel in Cusco – dinner at leisure – evening at leisure – tour leader on hand – overnight stay.
