Description
Japan, the Land of the Rising Sun.
It is hard to describe the Land of the Rising Sun. Technology and economic power now seem to overshadow daily life. And yet, even in Tokyo, and more easily in the countryside, towards the sea or in the splendid city of Kyoto, you can breathe the atmosphere of the past and admire temples and expressions of a culture and a way of life profoundly different from our own. It is a fascinating country which, in every one of its aspects, holds enormous surprises in store for those who are not content with observing the surface. In Japan every gesture, every cultural or artistic expression is imbued with grace, sober elegance and spirituality. It is no coincidence that this is the home of the tea ceremony, of ikebana – the art of flower arranging – of gardens as places of stone and silence, of kendo (fencing) and archery. Everything becomes an art form that takes on the quality of a ritual. Between Shinto and Buddhism, Japanese thought and ethics are an archipelago of legends into which, over the centuries, the Western world has inevitably found its way.
