  3. to experience the modernity of Shanghai

Tibet, “the roof of the world”.

With an average altitude of over four thousand metres, the Tibetan plateau is known as the “roof of the world”. It is also one of the most isolated regions on earth, bounded on three sides by some of the highest mountain ranges on the planet: the Kunlun and Tanggula to the north, the Karakoram to the west and the Himalayas to the south. It has always held a powerful attraction for travellers, partly for its majestic landscapes but above all for the all-embracing spirituality that pervades its towns and villages. Lhasa is the Forbidden City where the Dalai Lama once resided. Tibetans live as nomads, following their flocks of sheep and goats or herds of yak, the local cattle. This is especially true in the south, since the north, by contrast, is largely arid, desert-like and uninhabited. The region’s history has been decidedly turbulent, with alternating periods of conflict and Mongol and Chinese rule. Lhasa, the capital, is the sacred city of Tibetan Buddhism, as becomes clear the moment you stand before the imposing Potala Palace, a great fortress that dominates the city centre and the valley. To reach it you must climb to 3,658 metres. Inside the palace lived the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s highest religious authority, amid more than a thousand rooms spread over thirteen floors. More than 15,000 columns support its ceilings: an architectural jewel, together with ceremonial halls, chapels, enormous Buddhas and the chambers where the Dalai Lamas are entombed. The same spirituality can be felt around the Jokhang Temple and its enchanting gilded pagoda roofs. The atmosphere is distinctly medieval, with scores upon scores of pilgrims walking the Barkhor – the sacred circuit around the temple – performing prayer rituals, prostrating themselves and touching their foreheads to the ground. Even non-believers are struck by the emotional intensity of the faithful. Passing through the entrance of the Jokhang alongside the other Buddhist worshippers is a unique experience: inside, you walk through a main courtyard surrounded by sacred buildings and chapels, where you can admire the Jowo Buddha, a gilded statue richly adorned with jewels and silk ribbons. Between one corridor and the next you see prayer wheels, Buddha statues wrapped in half-light, and hundreds of yak-butter lamps lit by the pilgrims. Just outside the city stands the Norbulingka, the summer residence of the Dalai Lama. Inside, in the Summer Palace, are numerous mural paintings.
