Description
Grand Tour of China Prestige is not just a journey: it is a narrative itinerary through the dynasties, landscapes and emblematic cities of a civilisation thousands of years old. From the austere elegance of Beijing with its monumental squares to the memory-laden silence of the Ming Tombs, every stage of the tour is designed to evoke the might of the ancient Celestial Empire and its continual transformation. Impeccable organisation – with convenient international flights, 4/5-star hotels and expert tour leaders – lets travellers focus on the experience, free of distractions. The pace is brisk but never hurried. The days are rich in cultural content and visual delights, with well-spaced pauses to savour the local cuisine or to be surprised by a view or a market. The decision to include less-visited cities such as Pingyao and Zhangjiajie enriches an already very full itinerary and offers moments of genuine wonder. The shift from the medieval atmosphere of Pingyao to the breathtaking landscapes of Zhangjiajie is an emotional leap: from an ancient, intimate China to spectacular scenery that seems straight out of a dream. The tour ends in Shanghai, the symbol of contemporary China: a metropolis racing towards the future yet still anchored, at heart, to its gardens, temples and colonial quarters. The balance between ancient and modern is the common thread running through the whole programme: a rich, cultured and well-judged itinerary, perfect for anyone wishing to grasp the complexity and beauty of China in full.
Pingyao, the China you don't expect. On a journey dominated by the big names – Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai – there is one stop that surprises with its evocative power and authenticity: Pingyao. Nestled in Shanxi province, Pingyao is a small walled city that has miraculously survived intact. It is not a tourist reconstruction but a living fragment of imperial China. Strolling its cobbled streets is like stepping into a time machine: red lanterns on the balconies, shopfronts of carved wood, a silence broken only by the rhythm of footsteps. The tour allows time to explore its most significant sites at leisure, such as the Qiao Family Compound – a sumptuous patrician residence made famous by the film “Raise the Red Lantern” – or China's first exchange bank, the symbol of a refined economic past little known to the general public. The city's evening atmosphere, lit by warm lights and dotted with small restaurants and old-fashioned shops, makes this stop an emotional experience rather than a merely touristic one. This is the China of ancient gestures, low-rise architecture, hidden courtyards and slow rhythms. A China that lets itself be loved in silence, like a well-kept secret. Pingyao proves that, sometimes, it is the lesser-known destinations that leave the deepest memories.
