Description
Senegal is a West African country with a rich French heritage and many natural attractions. Dakar, the capital, is home to the old medina quarter and the important Musée Théodore Monod, which displays African art.
In the north of Senegal, near the border with Mauritania, lies Saint-Louis, a city completely different from the rest of the country and a tourist destination that is at once fascinating and curious. A landmark is the Faidherbe Bridge, the true icon of Saint-Louis, designed by the famous engineer Gustave Eiffel, who planned the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The city has an old quarter where colonial history can still be felt and a more modern, lively part. We will take a horse-drawn carriage ride through the historic centre of Saint-Louis, continuing along the ever-crowded little streets to take a look at the markets, the souvenir and local craft shops and the art galleries of the area. The modern part of the city lies around the harbour, the focal point of Saint-Louis, where every day the fishermen return and sell their fresh catch to the highest bidder. One must, however, reckon with poverty, present on every corner, and with stark social inequalities, a powerful aspect that always touches you deeply. North-east of Dakar lies Lake Retba, a huge salt lake whose unusual pink waters draw thousands of tourists every year to admire the evocative atmosphere of this little natural wonder. Located about 30 km from the capital, on the Cap-Vert peninsula (not to be confused with the islands of Cape Verde), Lake Retba owes its uniqueness to the presence of a bacterium in the water. Although not harmful to health, it causes the salinisation of the lake's water, which takes on various shades of pink depending on the light and the time of day. Anyone wishing to try this unique experience can happily take a dip in the lake and enjoy the extraordinary ease with which one stays afloat. All around, the dunes and desert sand form a backdrop that never fails to take your breath away, making Lake Retba one of the most evocative places in Senegal.
Dakar and Gorée Island.
Near Dakar lies Gorée Island, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and reached by a crossing of about 20 minutes from the capital's harbour. The island is very picturesque, with colonial-style buildings and houses, a small atoll where you can spend a day among souvenir markets and local produce in a calm, relaxed atmosphere, an ideal place to take excellent photos to remember your journey to Senegal by. In centuries past, however, Gorée held hundreds of slaves, and it is possible to visit the remains of the old prisons, including the Maison des Esclaves, the House of Slaves, in use until the first half of the 1800s. For a unique view, simply climb up to Le Castel, a vantage point from which you can see the island and the ocean all around.
