Caltagirone, a thousand-year tradition of ceramics. The story of Caltagirone ceramics goes back thousands of years. Some evidence takes us as far back as the 7th century BC, when man began to live by farming rather than hunting alone and, to store the fruits of the earth, started making clay pots and vessels. The Arabs, who arrived in Sicily in 827, brought new techniques such as glazing, and new shapes and decorations that revived the ceramic craft and raised it to the highest levels. Between 1200 and 1500 blue pottery combined with green and yellow also became established, while in the seventeenth century floor tiles, statuettes, washbasins and decorative elements came to the fore. From the end of the eighteenth century came the tradition of refined nativity figures, still popular today. Throughout the town of Caltagirone we can admire inlays of polychrome ceramics, from the staircase of Santa Maria del Monte to the bridge of San Francesco, from the bandstand in the public gardens to the garden's boundary wall.

The lava-stone elephant, known to the people of Catania as "u liotru", has become the secular symbol of the city of Catania and stands right in Piazza del Duomo. Legend has it that the magician Heliodorus, riding his pachyderm, opposed the relentless spread of Christianity in the city in the 8th century AD. Today the blasphemous elephant stands right there, in front of the residence of the city's most illustrious citizen, Saint Agatha, patron saint of the city (according to ancient chronicles, since 1239).

"Italy, without Sicily, leaves no image in the soul. It is in Sicily that the key to everything is to be found"
