Description
A state on the Arabian Peninsula made up of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Quwain. A fascinating land full of contrasts: cities bristling with spectacular high-rise buildings set against immense stretches of desert, the opulence of the shopping malls against the vibrant colours of the Arab souks, spectacular oasis cities and charming fishing villages, coral reefs and ski slopes. And then top-class sports centres, theatres, spas, archaeological sites, minarets and mosques, international museums... It truly seems that nothing is missing!
Al Ain is one of the oldest settlements, continuously inhabited, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The city is rich in picturesque forts. Among the historic buildings of the UAE, Al Jahili Fort was built in 1891 to defend the city and protect its precious palm groves, and today houses the permanent exhibition on the adventures of the Englishman Sir Wilfred Thesiger and his crossings of the Rub’ al Khali desert (the Empty Quarter) in the 1940s. Al Qattara Fort has been restored and houses a superb arts centre and art gallery. Within its walls, hundreds of contemporary exhibitions and a variety of workshops take place, from pottery to painting, music and calligraphy. Take a journey into the culture and history of the Emirates by visiting the city museum. Divided into three main sections (archaeology, ethnography and artefacts), the Al Ain National Museum will let you discover various aspects of life in the UAE, also reflected in its collections of Bedouin jewellery and traditional musical instruments. The former home of the founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Al Ain Palace Museum houses a wide range of objects that belonged to the ruler’s family. Visitors can see the private apartments and gardens once inhabited by the ‘Father of the Nation’. Other attractions in the city include the Al Ain Oasis with its cool, shaded pathways and a falaj irrigation system dating back 3,000 years, and the camel market, one of the few remaining
