Description
Carthage evokes memories that go back to our childhood. The first great rival of ancient Rome, a formidable adversary led by the famous commander Hannibal, it has also left its mark on literature and the visual arts. Virgil, the great Latin poet, set here the famous and heart-rending story of Queen Dido, abandoned by Aeneas as he fled the city of Troy. Many paintings in the history of art are also devoted to this celebrated city, which has by now become legendary. Founded, it seems, by a band of Phoenicians who had set out from the city of Tyre (in present-day Lebanon), Carthage quickly acquired such commercial and economic power that it came to rival Rome for control of the Mediterranean. It took three bloody wars, the celebrated Punic Wars, to overcome Carthage’s military might. Today, little evidence remains of the African city’s former glory, not least because Rome sought to erase almost every trace of it. What does remain, however, is a highly evocative setting of important archaeological remains beside the sea, which truly leaves no one unmoved.
El Jem has come to prominence over the past twenty years, above all following the release of the American blockbuster ‘Gladiator’. Many of its breathtaking sequences were in fact shot inside the great and magnificent amphitheatre, which draws huge numbers of visitors. Yet the importance of El Jem, today a lively and pleasant town with fine mosques and a bustling souk, goes far beyond its emblematic monument. Its ancient history in fact predates the Roman occupation: traces of Punic settlement have been found here. The amphitheatre remained intact in its entirety until the 17th century. From then on, its stones were used to build the neighbouring village and several mosques. The amphitheatre is best seen at dawn or sunset, the ideal time for photographs. Although the interior may be closed at those times, it is always possible to photograph the site from the surrounding streets. The amphitheatre is still used for concerts, especially in summer.
