Why this tour?

to get to know two of Europe's greatest wine regions

- to discover Bordeaux and Bilbao, two distinctive cities

- to stroll through Biarritz and San Sebastián, the pearls of the Bay of Biscay

Bordeaux, the city where “miracles happen”, in the words of the celebrated French writer André Breton. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the country, and over the last twenty years it has undergone an evolution and a transformation that have swept away all the shortcomings for which it used to be criticised. Its centre is lively at all hours, with a dynamic, friendly population fond of good living and good manners. Streets and alleys flow into admirable little squares where you can sit and sip wines that are among the most famous and elegant in the world. Even the former industrial and most run-down areas have been regenerated and are now at the heart of the urban network, thanks to new roads, improved public transport and new cycle and footpaths. Bordeaux is renowned for the Gothic cathedral of Saint-André, its 18th- and 19th-century mansions and its notable art museums, such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts. Public gardens line the quays along the bends of the river. The great Place de la Bourse, with the Fountain of the Three Graces at its centre, overlooks the vast Miroir d'Eau reflecting pool.

Saint-Émilion lies near Bordeaux and, in its wonderful balance of natural landscape, architecture and lifestyle, is a true symbol of France. The town is a superbly preserved medieval village dotted with bars and cellars offering the very best of French wine. Around the village, vineyards and green fields stretch as far as the eye can see. A town rich in history, perched on a rocky promontory, Saint-Émilion and its vineyards owe their originality to the limestone that has shaped their identity. Legend has it that in the mid-8th century a Breton monk from Vannes named Émilion took refuge in a hermitage called Ascumbas (the ancient name of the town of Saint-Émilion).

The grape varieties of the Bordeaux region

Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are the three main grapes used to make the red wines of Bordeaux. This composition, known as the “Bordeaux blend”, is now found in a great many wines produced all over the world. Alongside these varieties are Malbec and Petit Verdot, now little grown. The white wines of Bordeaux are less famous than the reds, with the exception of the noble-rot wines: Sauternes and Barsac are the two areas producing botrytised wines, or, as the French call them, Vins Liquoreux. The principal grape of these wines is Sémillon, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle and Ugni Blanc, which was brought to the region from Italy probably in the 14th century and is known to us as Trebbiano Toscano.
