Description
Patagonia, a wonderful land at the ends of the earth, is one of the most fascinating places on the planet, which has always drawn the most seasoned travellers like a magnet. Its vast spaces, lashing winds and imposing glaciers have been at the heart of literary works that have shaded into myth, such as the celebrated “In Patagonia” by the English author Bruce Chatwin. Indeed, it is not easy to describe an immense geographical area with a very low population density: here the true master is nature, with its outbursts, its whims and its quiet rests. Patagonia defines the grasslands of southern Argentina and Chile, animating them with an almost supernatural presence. The dominant colours are the blue of a sky scoured clean by strong winds, the white of the ice that stands guard over the sea routes, and the yellow and green of the low vegetation that stubbornly grows in an environment that does it no favours. The wildlife is etched imposingly in the memory: here are the largest colonies of penguins, which lend a touch of tenderness to these harsh lands. As you sail around the great glaciers, courting for example the colossal “Perito Moreno”, you can only imagine the great emotion felt by the first explorers who reached these latitudes half a millennium ago. The people who bring Patagonia to life seem to have devoted themselves to a kind of special mission: they are generations of settlers who emigrated here in search of immense, superhuman spaces, seeking their fortune and a better life. Today everyone speaks Spanish, but the surnames, lifestyles and family trees tell of ethnic and cultural cross-fertilisation that took place in the great natural theatre of Patagonia.
Ushuaia, the city at the ends of the earth, has become a legendary territory, suspended in an almost timeless dimension, on the threshold of the unknown. It is not, as it is often described, the southernmost city in the world (the record is contested by a Chilean town), but in the end that matters little: myth wins over geography. This city, which rises like a miracle in a land of extremes, is not very Argentine, not very “American”: with its southern atmosphere it might recall a mountain resort. Its beauty lies precisely in being a symbol: beyond Ushuaia there is only deep nature, with no room for man and his civilising fury. Ushuaia is the springboard to a new way of seeing things, the passport to unforgettable emotions and adventures of the heart and the eye.
