Easter Island

One of the most iconic and remote places in the world, immortalised in a famous film, “Rapa Nui”, which sealed its immortality. The Moai, those imposing testimonies of the indigenous culture, remain shrouded in mystery. Easter Island belongs to Chile, from which it lies a few hours’ flight away. We are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, at one of the corners of the so-called Polynesian triangle. Indeed, in the island’s artefacts and in the language and culture of its inhabitants one senses a cultural background typical of Polynesia. Easter Island, Rapa Nui in the local language, is of volcanic origin, formed essentially by no fewer than three extinct volcanoes. Because of its geographical position and extreme isolation, its biodiversity and plant life are among the poorest on the planet. This, however, did not hinder the development and flowering of an extraordinary migratory current and of its artistic expression on the island. Easter Island owes its unusual name to a European sailor, the Dutchman Jacob Roggeveen, who sighted it on Easter Sunday 1772. Another great and illustrious navigator, James Cook, set foot there in 1774, albeit very briefly. After being the scene of more or less tense clashes between various countries seeking to possess it, this fantastic volcanic territory passed definitively to Chile, not without some discontent. Today tourism too has set foot on Easter Island, leading to the development of hotels, restaurants, souvenir shops and everything needed to welcome a certain number of visitors. And yet Rapa Nui has lost none of its charm. There is something that always speaks to the hearts of visitors through the imposing bulk of the Moai: a feeling of mysticism, of spirituality, or however else one wishes to define it. That is why, ultimately, this is a destination every true traveller must reach at least once in a lifetime, a journey to the other side of the world, but one from which you return home changed, more aware of the geographical and cultural vastness of the wonderful planet we live on.
