Why this tour?

  1. to discover Chicago, the Windy City, city of the blues and of skyscrapers
  2. to enjoy the thousand moods of New Orleans
  3. to get to know the South & the contrasts of African America

New Orleans is Jazz.  Jazz was born and grew up in this city, and it still rings out through its streets, bars and squares today. Bourbon Street is the main street of the French Quarter, and its evocative name holds the whole history of the city, steeped in music, alcohol and fun but also in slavery, hard labour and endless cotton plantations. New Orleans is one of the most important cities in the State of Louisiana, with its port on the Mississippi, a haven for Caribbean peoples. It was founded in the eighteenth century by French settlers, who named it in honour of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, a prince of France. Thanks to its position it became a destination and hub of the African slave trade, and for centuries a latent racism persisted among its white inhabitants. Voodoo practices and black magic were (and perhaps still are) New Orleans' trademarks, although this side of the city is often exaggerated. In 2006 it was struck by one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States: Hurricane Katrina, which completely submerged the city, causing thousands of deaths and millions of dollars' worth of damage. Many will remember the images of the evacuees in the Superdome stadium. Little by little, however, the city has healed its wounds, and even those who had abandoned their homes have returned. The festive atmosphere that characterises New Orleans has been deeply marked by this tragedy, but precisely because the city wants to get back on its feet, historic and festive events such as Mardi Gras (a carnival unlike any other, drawing thousands of visitors from all over the world) have become a kind of "jazz funeral", a respectful remembrance of those who are no longer here, in an effort to smile again.
