The Parisian Passages.

The Passages were where European high society went shopping, and they would go on to inspire the modern department store. Appearing in Paris towards the end of the 18th century, they reached the height of their splendour in the first half of the 19th. Initially built of wood, the Passages later came to be characterised by the extensive use of glass and iron. They then evolved from places of consumption into monuments. The Galerie Véro-Dodat, dating from 1826, has been restored to its former glory after skilful restoration. The Galerie Vivienne, from 1823, houses, among other shops, the Petits-Sirioux bookshop, founded in 1826 and frequented by Aragon and Cocteau. The Passage Choiseul, from 1827, at no. 44 Rue des Petits-Champs, is home to Pandora, one of the capital’s best-known tea rooms. The Passage des Panoramas, from 1799, at no. 11 Boulevard Montmartre and no. 10 Rue Saint-Marc, owes its name to the landscape panoramas of the American Fulton, which were a resounding success with the public. In the Passage Jouffroy, at no. 10 Boulevard Montmartre, you will find the entrance to the Musée Grévin wax museum, the Sénanques pen shop and Degas’ walking-stick shop.

Returning to Paris to see new things.

A tour designed for those who have already seen the essentials of this splendid city. But as José Saramago says, “you have to go back over the steps already taken, to repeat them, and to trace new paths alongside them…” This is our invitation to discover areas untouched by mass tourism. Please note that some half-day visits are made entirely on foot, such as the Passages, from Pigalle to Montmartre, the Orangerie and the Tuileries, the Sainte-Chapelle and the Conciergerie, the Latin Quarter and Notre-Dame.
