Description
Brazil.
This country has always offered a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. Synonymous with music, dance, sport, superstition, festivals, carnival and unspoilt nature, Brazil is also so much more. The tour begins in wonderful Rio, the only city in the world to be a World Heritage Site in its entirety. It continues to the mighty Iguazú Falls and São Paulo, Brazil’s largest cultural city. Then on to the Amazon Rainforest, the most extensive tropical forest in the world, and visits to Manaus and Brasília – the modern capital – before reaching Salvador de Bahia, where we will let ourselves be carried along by the flood of humanity, colours and flavours of this city, which draws on a rich heritage of cultural diversity that can be traced in its most distinctive features, starting with its people.
Jorge Amado, the most famous Brazilian writer in the world.
In the life of this great novelist – born in Ilhéus in 1912 into a family of cocoa planters, the so-called “fazendeiros” – there are two great literary cycles. The first is that of strong social commitment, which led him to join the ranks of the Communist Party, to become a deputy, to be imprisoned and forced into exile, and to receive the Stalin Prize for literature. In this phase he wrote novels of stark realism denouncing exploitation. The superb “Jubiabá”, “Captains of the Sands”, “Cacau” and “Sweat” are essential reading. The second cycle is the one that relates to Bahia and begins in the late 1950s when Amado, setting aside political commitment and communism, starts to tell us about Salvador and its people, with its mulatto face. These are stories of women, of prostitutes, of vagabonds, of Candomblé rituals, of the struggle for life. All told with irony, a great spirit of tolerance and a heartfelt celebration of the racial and cultural syncretism of Bahia, against the backdrop of a colourful, warm tropical atmosphere. In dozens of countries, millions of readers have fallen in love with his tales. Not to be missed are “Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon”, “Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands”, “Tenda dos Milagres” (“Tent of Miracles”), “Teresa Batista Cansada de Guerra” (“Teresa Batista: Home from the Wars”), “Tieta do Agreste”, “Tocaia Grande” (“Showdown”) and the return to the setting of the cocoa plantations of Amado’s youth. Unmissable for any visitor to Bahia is “Bahia de Todos os Santos”, in which the great Amado takes us on an extraordinary sentimental journey through the city.
