Description
Fontainebleau is a Renaissance château that served as the residence of the sovereigns of France from Francis I to Napoleon III; in its complexity the building reflects the various eras in which it was inhabited. Since 1981 the château and its enormous park have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The building is surrounded by a series of gardens. The town of Fontainebleau grew up around the remains of the Forest of Fontainebleau, a former royal hunting park. This château introduced Italian Mannerism to France, applied to interior decoration and to the history of gardening. The French Mannerism of 16th-century interiors is known as the "Fontainebleau style": it combines sculpture, wrought ironwork, painting, stucco and inlay, while for the exteriors it introduced parterre gardens. The Fontainebleau style united allegorical paintings and sculptural forms, along with arabesques and grotesques. Its ideals of female beauty favoured small heads on long necks, exaggeratedly long torsos, small breasts and a return to the beauty of the late Gothic. The new works of Fontainebleau are famous for their refined, detailed engravings, sought after by connoisseurs and artists alike. Thanks to the engravings of the "School of Fontainebleau", this new style was exported to the states of central and northern Europe, above all to Antwerp and Germany, before reaching London as well.
Mont St Michel has regained its maritime character.
The works to restore the maritime character of Mont-Saint-Michel, which lasted ten years and were completed in 2015, have given a new face to this unique place. It is the start of a new page in the history of the Mount. Had nothing been done, by 2040 Mont-Saint-Michel would have been surrounded by salt meadows. It was the maritime setting that led the monks of the Middle Ages to settle in this precise spot and to build what would become one of the most extraordinary buildings in religious architecture. Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, is said to have founded a sanctuary on Mont-Tombe in 708, after three successive apparitions of the Archangel Michael. The Abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, towering over the immensity of the bay, is the high point of the visit.
