Description
The Mauritshuis Museum.
In the heart of The Hague stands the seventeenth-century Mauritshuis, originally built as a residence and lodging for distinguished guests. Today the palace houses the museum devoted to the art of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The museum’s collection comprises around 800 works by various artists – masterpieces of the Dutch masters. The gallery holds works by the most important Dutch and Flemish painters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Here you can admire Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, Rembrandt’s The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp and Fabritius’s The Goldfinch. The Mauritshuis also offers the chance to contemplate works by Rubens, Jan Steen and Frans Hals. On account of its exceptional collection, the palace, regal in style both inside and out, is also nicknamed “the jewel box”. It reopened its doors in 2014 after extensive refurbishment. The most significant change is that the museum has doubled its floor space through the addition of a further building to the palace. The total surface area now reaches 6,400 square metres. We shall be able to pass from one building to the other through an underground link. Do not forget to look at the exterior of the palace: it is one of the high points of seventeenth-century architecture. The museum stands next to the Binnenhof and the government buildings, a setting that is certainly worth exploring on foot.
Panorama Mesdag.
Panorama Mesdag is an illusion 14 metres high and 120 metres in circumference. It was painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, his wife and a few friends. It is one of the most beautiful and largest surviving panoramic paintings in the world. You can see the sea, the beach, the dunes and the fishing village of Scheveningen while standing in the city of The Hague. This is made possible by the largest circular painting in Europe: the panorama takes you back to the year 1880. The beach is a hive of activity: fishing boats are being hauled onto the sand, a military exercise is under way and people are enjoying the sun and the water. You can even spot Mesdag’s wife, busy painting on the beach. Panorama Mesdag is an experience in space and time: a spectacular illusion that seems to become reality.
