Bergen and the Hanseatic League

The city between the seven mountains was founded in 1070, though the site is thought to have served as a trading port long before then. Alongside the English, Scots and Dutch, it was above all the Germans of the Hanseatic League who settled here to trade. Reminders of that mercantile epic are found throughout the city. The best-known example of the era is the Bryggen district, on the eastern shore of the harbour of Vågen (known until the Second World War as “the German wharf”), which dates from the Middle Ages but was rebuilt after the fire of 1702 following the original models. In the typical houses of the period, built of wood in bright colours with pointed gables, the Hansa merchants had by the mid-fourteenth century opened their offices and common rooms (“Schøtstuene”) where business was discussed and convivial gatherings held to seal it. Their entry into the city’s economic life was not easy: a series of decrees issued between 1299 and 1344 had forbidden foreigners to form associations. But the deadly epidemic that struck the whole country paralysed Bergen and created an emergency in food supplies. It was then that King Magnus saw fit to let the Germans work. By around 1550 some 2,000 Germans were resident in Bergen. Importing grain from the south and buying fish in Norway, the Hanseatics created a system of credit whereby fishermen were obliged to supply their catch exclusively to the League’s Offices until their debt was paid off. A stroll through the fish market is, finally, an unmissable and picturesque stop on this journey back into the past.

Norway is one of the most fascinating countries in Northern Europe. It is the dream of so many of us: to discover unspoilt nature and breathtaking scenery, mountains and waterfalls plunging into the water, fairy-tale glaciers, world-famous fjords, forest paths, fish markets, characterful villages, but also cities with a metropolitan feel. And as if that were not enough… a care for beauty, for art and for preserving the distinctive features of its culture, visible in the museums, in typical mid-fourteenth-century houses, wooden churches and districts rebuilt to ancient medieval models that offer a plunge into the past. English, Scottish, Dutch and German merchants settled here to trade, creating an enchanting and unique mix in the architecture too. The tour will take us into this wonderful world, thanks also to short cruises and scenic excursions by train and funicular.
