Description
Portugal, where “the Atlantic meets Europe”. The slogan of Portuguese tourism is a fair attempt to bring together the opposites that, unexpectedly, touch here. A complete tour of the land of fado is a succession of postcards to be kept in the mind. This is, as in the collective imagination, a wild and precious land rich in aromas and colours, which leaves a powerful memory in everyone who has been there. It has peculiarities that make it unique: lashed by the wind and then suddenly scorched by the heat, where fishing villages give way to ancient monasteries and beautiful cities of art, to markets that bear witness to crafts still very much alive, and to open-air concerts. Its exceptional architectural, historical and cultural heritage is matched by a traditional cuisine based on local produce and spices that is absolutely delicious. For its richness and variety it is, in short… a land from which no one returns disappointed!
Did you know? The Portuguese, a nation of pioneers.
What could have driven a small and, in truth, poor country to launch itself – successfully – into the great adventure of the discoveries? First and foremost economic motives, then the great seafaring experience of a people born on the sea, the rise of a merchant class hungry for trade, population growth and, not least, a certain spirit of adventure and an undeniable religious component. It is no coincidence that the sails of the caravels devised by Henry the Navigator and the scholars of Sagres bore the cross of the Order of Christ, of which the prince was Grand Master. So many different underlying impulses, and the right men to take them on, from Henry himself to Dias, Cabral, Vasco da Gama and Magellan. Men who would usher in the great age of discovery.
