Description
The Azores, a green archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic.
With their blue lakes ringed by flowers, breathtaking views from the hills down to the ocean and lush green landscapes cloaking ancient volcanic craters, the nine islands of the Azores are a paradise for nature lovers. They are the westernmost point of all Europe, and over the last five hundred years every seafarer has passed this way: adventurers setting out into the unknown, emigrants in search of a new life, whale hunters. We will set off to discover this little corner of the world, amid vibrant colours and genuine traditions. The archipelago’s natural wonders are many: the Azores offer wonderfully varied scenery, ranging from volcanic craters to forests, waterfalls, hot springs and sheer cliffs. Prepare yourself for a breathtaking spectacle! On the island of São Miguel one of the loveliest excursions, perhaps taking in the spectacular Vista do Rei viewpoint, is to the Caldeira das Sete Cidades, an immense caldera filled by two twin lakes. Also on São Miguel, don’t miss Lagoa do Fogo, another crater lake with a long beach of white pumice. On Faial, after a stroll along the Marina at Horta, go and visit the area of Ponta dos Capelinhos, with its solitary lighthouse that has become an icon of the island. You will also find some black-sand beaches on the south coast. Terceira is rich in picturesque fishing villages. The island is worth visiting not only for its landscapes but also to spend a day in Angra do Heroísmo, the historic capital of the Azores, whose old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
