Description
Monument Valley with a Navajo guide, a unique experience.
We set off from the hotel in Kayenta by minivan. The tour inside the valley lasts around two and a half hours and takes in the “classic” spots such as John Ford Point (made famous by the film Stagecoach), the Three Sisters, the Mittens and Artist Point, but also places not open to everyone: Sun’s Eye, Ear of the Wind, and entry to and a visit inside a Hogan (the traditional Navajo dwelling), with an introduction to Navajo culture and a meeting with a weaver. At the end of the tour we arrive in a part of the valley where another guide will already have started preparing the fire for dinner. Dinner consists of steak, salad, Navajo bread, corn and beans, with water and lemonade to drink. Monument Valley is a deeply spiritual place, and the tour inside the valley with dinner, amid the silence, the colours of the red earth and the blue of the sky, is one of the most beautiful experiences of this itinerary.
The Grand Canyon, one of the most beautiful and moving places in the world, lies in the northern part of the state of Arizona, for the most part within Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States of America. It is an immense gorge carved over more than 5 million years by the Colorado River, and its dimensions are staggering: a long cut some 446 kilometres in length, up to 1,600 metres deep in places and varying in width from 500 metres to 27 kilometres. It is astonishing how, thanks to the erosive action of the Colorado River and its tributaries, almost two million years of our planet’s history have been brought to light. The climate in summer is hot by day and cool at night, while in winter it is cold with frequent heavy snowfalls. Temperatures are also generally lower on the North Rim than on the South Rim, owing to the difference in altitude. If you wish to visit the Grand Canyon, remember that there are two different sides to see: the North Rim, open from May to October, with a single entrance from Jacob Lake, and the South Rim, open all year round with two entrances, one to the east and one to the west; the latter is also the better equipped for tourists and the more visited, since you can drive along the road leading to the main scenic overlooks as far as the Visitor Center. In March 2007, after almost three years of work, the SkyWalk was opened at Grand Canyon West: a steel and glass bridge that lets you walk suspended over the Grand Canyon at a height of 1,200 metres. Although we are not far from warm California, in the winter months the climate is fairly harsh, with temperatures around freezing in the coldest months such as November, December and January, which are also very rainy months with heavy snowfalls. The best time to visit Grand Canyon National Park is summer, when there are many hours of sunshine and temperatures are not excessively high. Of course, one of the best ways to take in the wonders of the Grand Canyon is a helicopter excursion, which lets you admire the grandeur of the Grand Canyon from above and “fly” between its many-coloured rock walls. It is equally worthwhile to walk (though there is also a very well-organised shuttle bus service inside the park) the road leading to the various “viewpoints”, where you can stop and admire this marvellous spectacle that only nature can offer. The landscape of the Grand Canyon is spectacular, hard to describe in words without diminishing it; once you reach the Park and look out over the gorge, no photograph will do it justice: your eyes will be filled with this unique and unforgettable spectacle of nature.
