Description
South Africa is the country that embodies the most intense contradictions and challenges of the entire African continent. The story of apartheid is known to all, in what was the homeland of an iconic figure like Nelson Mandela. Even today, after his great example of a life, social tensions sometimes simmer in a context where integration strives to make ever greater headway. But it is not only history that makes the heart of this enormous country beat, a country where the lands of the African continent become cliffs and then the foaming waves of the Ocean. An exhilarating concentration of cities and nature, of spectacular skyscrapers and wretched shanty towns, picture-postcard scenic roads and stunning beaches awaits the traveller, dazed by so much variety. Cape Town is the gateway to the country: the most emblematic and lively city in all of Africa, in its fascinating, enveloping marriage of metal, sand and mountains. A sparkling, hospitable population is driven by a contagious appetite for novelty and for the future. Around Cape Town wind the scenic roads that follow the sinuous line of the roaring coast: tarmac that climbs and descends along striking headlands from which to admire unforgettable sunsets. Sometimes, along the way, you give in to the temptation to sit in the open air and sip an excellent South African wine, as unexpected as it is surprising: it is time for the Winelands. Then you reach the wild heart of the country, where the eye opens onto the vastness of the national parks: chief among them the Kruger, where on safari you can spot the so-called Big Five. You come into contact with the ancestral spirit of the great African land: a mixture of nostalgia and sense of belonging that is hard to explain. South Africa is a journey from which you never return quite as you were before, a true education for the eye and an experience for the soul.
Boulders Beach: African penguins in South Africa. Who has never felt a flutter of tenderness at the sight of the funny, ungainly gait of these amusing creatures? Well, penguins do not live only among the ice, and they do not always dive into the water from mighty icebergs. And it is precisely on this beach in the far south of the country that, unexpectedly, a large colony of penguins is to be found and, with a little luck, it is possible to spot seals as well. A little further on, around Walker Bay, the traveller will make out the trails and paths of southern right whales and other cetaceans. This is one of the secrets that make up the magic of South Africa: getting to know a splendid, exuberant wildlife with which close encounters are possible.
