Why this tour?

  1. to admire the fairy-tale landscape of Cappadocia
  2. to discover Istanbul's UNESCO World Heritage Sites
  3. to visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations in Ankara, a museum like no other

Cappadocia is a historical region of Anatolia, once located in the area that is now central Turkey, taking in parts of the provinces of Kayseri, Aksaray, Niğde and Nevşehir. Cappadocia is distinguished by a geological formation and a historical and cultural heritage that are unique in the world. In 1985 it was added by UNESCO to the World Heritage List. The region that today goes by the name of Cappadocia is much smaller than the ancient Kingdom of Cappadocia of the Hellenistic era. It can be thought of as a circle some fifty kilometres across. The area has fewer than a million inhabitants, but the settlements lie so close to one another that they give the impression of a single city spread over a very large region. On many maps the name Cappadocia does not even appear, because it is not a political division as such, but rather a historical region that takes in parts of several provinces.

Cappadocia's unique landscape is the result of natural forces at work over thousands of years. Around 60 million years ago the Taurus mountain range was formed in southern Anatolia, at the same time as the Alps were forming in Europe. The formation of the Taurus range created numerous ravines and depressions in central Anatolia. Ten million years ago these depressions were filled by volcanic magma and other material from the many erupting volcanoes. Gradually the depressions disappeared, turning the region into a plateau. The rock that filled the depressions, however, offers little resistance to erosion by wind, rain, rivers and swings in temperature, and so erosion was able to "sculpt" the many valleys for which Cappadocia is famous. Of particular interest are the open-air museum of Göreme, the underground cities of Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, the Zelve Valley, Gomeda and Peribacalar Vadisi (the Valley of the “Fairy Chimneys”).

Hot-air balloons

Cappadocia offers visitors its extraordinary natural setting, beyond anything the imagination can conjure, combined with refined beauty. Discovering the grace of this place on a hot-air balloon ride is a unique and exclusive pleasure! These balloons, fitted with controls for rising and descending, and in the skilled hands of their pilots, at times climb to 3,000 feet (around 1,000 metres) and at times drop until they almost brush the treetops. This gives you the chance to take “a fantastic journey” carried by the local breeze or by the high-altitude winds. From the balloons, which take off early in the morning from the Göreme valley, you can admire and discover from above the magical geography of Cappadocia, the incredible Fairy Chimneys shaped over thousands of years, the settlements of Ürgüp, Avanos, Çavuşin, Zelve, Göreme and Uçhisar, the sunrise and the sunset as dusk falls.

Carpet and Kilim Weaving

Weaving, present in Cappadocia since the Byzantine period, is widespread above all in Ürgüp and Avanos. In Avanos, moreover, kilims are made with designs that differ from the traditional ones. In the old carpets of the area, made with natural dyes, Seljuk motifs dominate, whereas today the motifs show the influence of the surrounding areas. The countless shops in Cappadocia display not only local carpets and kilims but also pieces from every region of Turkey.
