Description
Port, an English invention.
The birth of Port dates back to the end of the seventeenth century. At that time English merchants, having broken off trade with France because of a series of wars, had begun to appreciate the wines of the Alto Douro. Since these wines travelled poorly on the voyage home, brandy began to be added to them, precisely in order to halt the fermentation of the must and lock in the considerable sugar content: Port was born. A few years later, with the Treaty of Methuen (1703), the English secured the commercial monopoly on it in exchange for the help given to Portugal in its struggle against the Spanish. Many of them set up wine houses in the valley, which explains the large number of English firms still active today, such as Sandeman, Graham, Offley and Cockburn. The Port demarcated region, already regulated in 1757, stretches along the River Douro and its tributaries; Port has become the undisputed king of Portuguese nights, and from its viewpoint, São Pedro de Alcântara, you can enjoy the finest panorama of the city.
