AACHEN
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Frankfurt, Historic Centre

Why this tour?

  1. to soak up the unique atmosphere of the Romantische Strasse
  2. to discover UNESCO-listed artistic treasures
  3. to visit Aachen Cathedral

This exclusive tour is designed for all those who want the perfect blend of scenic beauty and artistic and historical heritage. Discovering towns and villages, cruising along the Rhine and visiting sites and attractions will bring a succession of unexpected emotions and one certainty: Germany is a country of great impact. The gateway will be Frankfurt, a city whose DNA blends a highly dynamic present with a past displayed in all its completeness in the historic Römerberg quarter.

Aachen is one of Europe's most evocative artistic treasures. Its cathedral was the first German monument to be included in UNESCO's prestigious list of protected sites. The wonder you feel on visiting it is matched only by the magnificence on display: the building was even nominated as one of the seven modern wonders of the world. The cathedral, whose core is the Palatine Chapel, is an elegant and refined blend of Byzantine, Gothic and Baroque. On his death in 814, Charlemagne was buried in his church, where his remains are still kept in a shrine, together with his throne and his reliquary bust. The Palatine Chapel (in German: Kaiserkapelle) is an octagonal structure about 31 m high and 16 m in diameter, supported by sturdy pillars. Above the arches of the gallery rises an octagonal drum with windows, on which rests the dome covering the central space. Around these pillars runs a 16-sided ambulatory with low cross vaults, above which stands a tall gallery, also vaulted and closed off by Carolingian-style bronze gates. The columns adorning the openings of the octagon are mostly ancient and come from Rome, Trier and Ravenna. In the gallery above the entrance stands Charlemagne's throne. This Carolingian octagon was begun and completed in 796 in the Byzantine style by the master builder Odo of Metz. It was consecrated on the feast of the Epiphany in 804 by Pope Leo III.

Heidelberg is among the oldest cities in all of Germany. It began as an embroidery on the banks of the River Neckar and unfolds in all its grace over the surrounding hills. Along its evocative streets runs a string of medieval buildings and churches. Many writers and artists have savoured the atmosphere of this place, among them Goethe, William Turner and Mark Twain. It was on the gentle banks of the Neckar that the Germanic cultural movement known as Romanticism was born and spread, going on to shape the arts and letters of the whole of Europe. Heidelberg is also an ancient university city, still home to a large student community that gives it a lively, bohemian atmosphere. High above the upper part of the city rises the elegant silhouette of the Castle of the Prince-Electors of the Palatinate.

The Romantische Strasse is one of the most famous routes in the whole of Germany: 370 km winding from north to south, from the enchantment of the Bavarian Alps to the lovely town of Würzburg. Like pearls strung on a necklace, romantic landscapes alternate with fairy-tale castles, towns of half-timbered houses and mighty medieval walls, Gothic or Baroque pilgrimage churches and monasteries. The Romantische Strasse is therefore an unmissable experience that will bring no end of emotions to every traveller who follows it.
