Description
A journey designed for those who want "the best of Paris" combined with the fantastic locations of Mont Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo and the Châteaux of the Loire, with the final treat of Chartres Cathedral, "the Sistine Chapel of Stained Glass".
Did you know? Versailles. You cannot really understand the expression "It’s not the Palace of Versailles" until you actually visit this residence of the French kings. Then you are astonished by its magnificence and realise that nothing in the world compares to this complex. Versailles was merely a hunting lodge that Louis XIII had built, reclaiming an area of foul-smelling ponds and forests, in case he happened to pass through Versailles. Under Louis XIV, the Sun King, the château and the estate became a royal palace and, above all, a reflection of the power and military victories of this monarch, who reigned for 72 years. In Paris he felt besieged, seeing conspiracies by the nobles on every side, so he decided to move the Court to the more secluded setting of Versailles. Here life ran as regularly as clockwork. The king’s rising was an unchanging ritual and the birth of the Dauphin a public ceremony. Even the mistresses had to observe a strict etiquette. Gossip and escapades, intrigues and perjury could not disturb daily life in the most dazzling palace in Europe. Here Louis XIV squandered fortunes unthinkable for the time, so that everything should be to his glory, a symbol of his magnificence. And today it has regained its original splendour.
