Description
A tour for those who long to fill their eyes and their soul!
We begin with a visit to the places, steeped in spirituality, where the great friar lived for fifty years, before moving on to sites of immense artistic, cultural and scenic value, visited by tourists from all over the world and the object of renewed and growing interest in recent years.
The Castellana Caves, among the most beautiful and spectacular in Italy.
The Castellana Caves, a complex of underground karst cavities of great interest to visitors, are located in the municipality of Castellana-Grotte, about 1.5 km from the town. They extend for 3,348 metres and reach a maximum depth of 122 metres below the surface. The temperature inside hovers around 16.5°C. The full visit to the Caves starts from the Grave, the first and largest cavern of the underground system and the only one naturally connected to the outside world: 100 metres long, 50 wide and
60 deep. It is characterised by the numerous stalagmites on its floor, foremost among them a majestic group in the centre (known as “The Cyclops”). The visit to the Caves continues through corridors and other chambers of widely varying shapes and sizes. Stalactites, stalagmites, curtains, columns and precious crystals line the entire route. The names of the various chambers, inspired by the characteristic shapes taken by the rock, are the fruit of the imagination of the first explorers. We find the myth of the Roman She-Wolf, assorted monuments, the Owl, the Madonna devoutly kneeling, the Serpent, the Altar, the Precipice, the Desert Corridor, the Upturned Column (the Tower of Pisa), the Red Corridor, the Dome. The magnificence never ends and every stretch captivates the mind and enraptures the gaze, right up to the silent wonder of the final star: the most beautiful cavern of the underground system, the Grotta Bianca, described, for the richness and whiteness of its alabaster, as “the most resplendent in the world”.
