Description
A tour organised down to the smallest detail, crossing the three Baltic States with Helsinki as the final treat. The area they cover is little more than half the size of Italy. They are countries that differ from one another in language (Estonian is of Finno-Ugric origin, the other two are Indo-European) and in their economic and political situations, given that Latvia and Lithuania show less clear signs of economic recovery. But what they have in common, besides the Baltic Sea on which they all lie, is a recent history of struggle for independence (achieved in 1991) and the same geographical features: the land, shaped by the ice ages, appears as a vast depression and the hills rise no higher than 300 metres. They are countries rich in water: there are around 7,000 lakes and countless rivers and streams. The climate is temperate, with winters that are not too harsh and – luckily for us – average summer temperatures of around 20°C.
In the summer months we can enjoy the experience of the sun setting at midnight and rising before six. They are little-known countries, despite having been an important crossroads between the Scandinavian countries, Russia and Western Europe. These highly distinctive regions will come as a surprise even to seasoned travellers, for the warmth of their people and the way nature and traditions have been preserved (to get to know them better we have also included 3 dinners in traditional venues with music and a visit to the Rocca al Mare Ethnographic Museum in Tallinn). Discovering them can only begin with their beautiful capitals: Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius are ancient cities, rich in history and artistic heritage, which is why their respective historic centres have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Helsinki at the end of the tour enriches it further, with its views of the sea, its many parks and green spaces and its great number of bars and restaurants.
