Why this tour?

  1. to visit the 3 iconic cities of South America
  2. to discover the spectacular Iguazú Falls, on the border between three countries
  3. to discover Punta del Este, the most beautiful seaside resort in South America

Uruguay, a model country.

With almost half of its entire population (mostly of Spanish and Italian origin) living in the metropolitan area of the capital, Montevideo, the small State of Uruguay (in the South American subcontinent only Suriname is smaller still) is the country in Latin America where freedom and civil rights are most developed. Quite a “leap forward” for a nation that experienced military dictatorship little more than thirty years ago. Uruguay is also, of all the South American countries, the one with the best quality of life and the least widespread corruption. Facts that bring back into fashion a comparison much in vogue before the struggle for liberation from the dictatorship, according to which Uruguay can be considered the Switzerland of South America. Montevideo, the capital and the real attraction of the whole of Uruguay, was founded under the name of San Felipe y Santiago de Montevideo in 1723, in response to the relentless Portuguese advance along the shores of the Río de la Plata. It was the British, however, who stormed it on 3 February 1807: within a few hours His Majesty’s army had taken possession of the city, only to abandon it a few days later, following the defeat at Buenos Aires. From then on, however, British influence continued to make itself felt. For much of the 20th century Montevideo, thanks to its flourishing commercial economy, became the destination of huge waves of migration that have left marks still tangible in the city’s social fabric today, imbuing it with an intriguing cosmopolitan aura. The districts and buildings of greatest interest are concentrated in the Ciudad Vieja, built on a small peninsula. The only surviving trace of the old colonial fortress from which Montevideo grew is the Puerta de la Ciudadela. Passing through it you reach Plaza Independencia, where the equestrian statue of José Gervasio Artigas stands. A few steps away you can visit the capital’s main historic buildings, from the Palace of Justice to the Palacio Estévez. Also in the centre stands the Iglesia Matriz, the oldest building in the whole city (1799). Another of Montevideo’s claims to fame is the Teatro Solís, considered one of the finest modern theatres in the world. Not to be missed is the Mercado del Puerto, once the finest port in South America and today transformed into a picturesque, lively hub dotted with restaurants and markets.
