Description
Niagara Falls, located in north-eastern America on the border between the USA and Canada, are among the most famous waterfalls in the world on account of their sheer scale. They are not particularly high (a drop of just 52 m), but their fame is certainly due to the spectacular setting created by their vast curtain of water and immense flow. They are the largest waterfalls in North America and probably among the best known in the world. Geographically they lie within the region known as the Niagara Peninsula, not far from the Canadian city of St. Catharines, about half an hour’s drive from the US city of Buffalo and about an hour and a half from Toronto.
The three falls. Strictly speaking, they are a complex of three distinct waterfalls, all fed by the same river, the Niagara. They begin on the Canadian side with the Horseshoe Falls (so called for their semicircular shape), sometimes also known as the Canadian Falls, separated from the American Falls on the US side by Goat Island, and end, again on US soil, with the smaller Bridal Veil Falls. The falls straddle the border between Canada and the United States of America and lie precisely between Lakes Erie and Ontario, two of the most important lakes in the US river system. Niagara Falls are also famous for the generation of electricity. The place was brought to wide fame by the film “Niagara”, shot in 1953 by director Henry Hathaway and starring Marilyn Monroe: many of the buildings and locations that served as the film’s backdrop have been preserved just as they were, to the delight of tourists and film buffs. It has always been a traditional honeymoon destination for many North Americans and, for some years now, for visitors from overseas too. One of the most famous tourist sites in the world for over a century, this natural wonder is shared between the twin cities of the same name: Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York State.
