Description
The Aegadian Islands.
The Aegadian archipelago (Isole Egadi) lies at the western tip of Sicily, just a few miles from Trapani, and is made up of the islands of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, the islet of Formica and the rock of Maraone. Set in splendid crystal-clear waters, the Aegadian Islands are home to a rich and varied marine flora and fauna, which makes the archipelago a sought-after destination for lovers of snorkelling, diving and sailing. The natural beauty that characterises the waters of Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo extends to the land as well: for those who love walking in the midst of nature, the islands offer lush vegetation, including endemic plants with medicinal properties, while among the wildlife the birdlife is of particular importance. To preserve the natural beauty of the archipelago, the Aegadian Islands Marine Protected Area (AMP) was recently established, the largest marine reserve in Europe. Administratively the islands belong to the municipality of Favignana and have a total of 4,300 residents.
