Description
In Iceland you can walk on two different continents at the same time.
From a geological point of view, Iceland is truly incredible. It is in fact the only place in the world where a mid-ocean ridge literally rises out of the water. Iceland is a volcanic island, formed by the accumulation of lava and pyroclastic material (all the products emitted during an explosive eruption) along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Ridges are immense underwater volcanic chains that run through all the oceans. They form when two tectonic plates in contact with each other move apart, fracturing the ocean floor and allowing molten magma to rise. This mechanism continuously produces new crust, which gradually “paves” the entire ocean floor. In Iceland’s case, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge separates the American plate from the Eurasian plate: it is here that the Earth’s crust splits open, generating volcanism and earthquakes. Precisely because of this geological structure, Iceland is studded with volcanoes and thermal phenomena such as geysers and hot springs. As if that were not enough, along comes something to amplify it all: the hot spot, an anomalous upwelling of deep mantle that generates persistent volcanic activity directly above it. And right beneath Iceland lies a hot spot, adding to the activity of the ridge… in short, it could hardly be more volcanic! In Iceland the ridge lies above sea level. So in Iceland you can travel from America to Europe without taking a plane! The ridge can be visited and walked on by anyone with a spirit of adventure, since it crosses the whole of Iceland.
The Blue Lagoon lies less than 40 km from the capital Reykjavík, near Grindavík, and is one of the most visited attractions on the island. It is a thermal lagoon and a genuine natural wellness centre where you can relax and restore yourself, a geothermal pool of warm water at around 39°C, rich in sulphur and silica and with a characteristic milky colour due to the presence of a skin-healing alga, Cyanobacteria. If you are thinking of a holiday in Iceland, the Blue Lagoon is an absolute must; here you can also buy products made with these waters, which bring various benefits to the skin, as well as wellness packages with massages and other health and beauty treatments, for a day devoted to wellness… in Iceland too! About 800 years ago a major volcanic eruption took place here, and it is within this volcanic rock that this artificial lake of 6 million litres of warm water was created in 1976. The golden beach of Nauthólsvík, built with tonnes of imported sand, also helps to make the atmosphere truly special. And should it rain, you can bathe in the waters of Árbæjarlaug, at Fylkisvegur, one of the most beautiful indoor pools on the island.
The Northern Lights: pure emotion amid the ice. Of all the natural wonders to be admired in Iceland, the aurora borealis holds a special place: a phenomenon as real as it is dreamlike, which transforms the night sky into a silent dance of lights, colours and ancient suggestions. The “Wonderful Iceland” tour does not merely tell the story of the Northern Lights: it actively seeks them out, taking travellers away from the city lights in the best conditions for sighting them. It is not just an excursion: it is a ritual. You set off wrapped in darkness, you scan the clouds, you wait in silence. Then, if nature allows, the green and pink veils of the aurora appear: electromagnetic streams that meet the atmosphere and light up the Arctic night. To see it is a privilege. To photograph it, a feat. But to experience it… is something that stays in your visual and sensory memory for a lifetime. The light of the aurora is never forgotten: it illuminates the sky and, for a moment, those who watch it too. That is why the aurora is not a stop on the itinerary but the symbolic heart of the journey. And it is precisely the real possibility of admiring it, thanks to well-planned excursions, that makes this tour such a worthwhile proposition. Because in Iceland everything is a wonder: but a night beneath the Northern Lights is the true masterpiece.
