A holiday in Namibia means nature, adventure and beauty.
Namibia offers the chance to explore spaces that seem endless and impress with their very essence; the savannah and its inhabitants, the desert dunes and the rainforest captivate the travellers who set out on this journey.
This country, on the west coast of Africa, is home to many different ethnic groups, living in complete harmony and together creating a rare magic.
Let us look together at the wonderful places that only this land can offer.
The Namib Desert
This desert is one of the largest and oldest on the planet and is the symbol of the country; it lies along the coastal strip of south-western Africa, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, reaching at its widest up to 200 km inland from the coastline.
Within it are several protected natural areas, one of the most important being the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest in Africa.
You will be left open-mouthed admiring golden dunes among the tallest and most spectacular in the world, such as the famous Big Daddy, 305 metres high. Sand dunes are one of the distinctive features of this desert, which is also marked by fog phenomena caused by the Benguela current; because of these fogs, over the centuries hundreds of vessels have sunk along the desert coast in a stretch known, quite literally, as the “Skeleton Coast”.
Continuing your discovery of this desert, carry on to the Sesriem Canyon, a fissure in the rock carved by the Tsauchab river over a period of almost 15 million years; about a kilometre long and up to 30 metres deep, it is a highly scenic spectacle not to be missed.
Etosha National Park
A reserve unique in the world, home to 114 species of mammals, 340 species of birds, 110 species of reptiles and 16 species of amphibians. The Park is famous for its extremely high concentration of animals, which are easy to spot on a safari.
To make wildlife spotting easier, artificial waterholes have been created where you can stop and watch the animals coming to drink.
The park can be visited either in a day (paying close attention to which route to follow) or over several days, sleeping inside the park in one of its lodges; the latter option offers the chance to enjoy the light of dawn and dusk in the company of elephants, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and many other animals.
The park’s name refers to a vast area within it where the ground is white because of its saline origin.
Epupa Falls
On the border with Angola lie these waterfalls, truly incredible in their beauty; this part of the country not only offers this natural spectacle but also the chance to come into contact with several local peoples, with very different customs and traditions, who live together peacefully.
Fish River Canyon
On the border with South Africa you can visit the second largest canyon in the world, a paradise for those who love trekking in spectacular places made unique by majestic landscapes. There are numerous viewpoints within it where you can enjoy views over the canyon from above and appreciate the light of dawn and dusk.
These are precisely the itineraries that give visitors from all over the world the famous “mal d’Africa”, that unique feeling of no longer being able to do without such incredible views and landscapes.
