Description
Angkor Wat, the temple that rose from the rainforest.
In the depths of the largest archaeological site in the world, among enchanting bas-reliefs, temples as tall as mountains and lush vegetation, five kilometres from the town of Siem Reap in Cambodia, the Temple of the City (Angkor Wat, in the Khmer language) emerges from the dense forest: an archaeological site of inestimable value and uniqueness.
In the 12th century AD, King Suryavarman II had the immense sacred complex built in just 30 years. Yet the rest of the world only came to know of it in 1860, thanks to the French explorer Henri Mouhot, who described it in his travel diary as follows: “… erected by some ancient Michelangelo… It is grander than anything left to us by the Greeks or the Romans, and presents a sad contrast to the state of barbarism in which the nation is now plunged”. The Frenchman got the historical period wrong, believing it belonged to antiquity – not without reason, since the harmony of the Temple of Angkor is comparable to the architecture of classicism, characterised by a perfection of proportion and a unity that embraces its many buildings. Its typical decorative elements include the enchanting apsaras (or devatas), female deities and seductive nymphs who could drive men to madness, and the bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the Mahabharata and the Ramayana (Hindu epic poems). It seems that the two most widely accepted theories on the function of this immense religious complex, the largest in the world, are these: the first is that it was intended as the mausoleum of King Suryavarman II; the second is that it was built in honour of the god Vishnu, one of the three principal divine aspects of the Trimurti, and later converted to Theravada Buddhism.
