  3. to stay overnight on the Red Sea and the Dead Sea

Jordan, a land rich in every sense, still weighed down by a common perception of poor security and difficulty. An area set between Europe and Asia, a strategic crossroads, it bears clear traces of all the peoples who have lived here, among them the Moabites, Amorites, Israelites, Greeks and Romans. It is for this reason an immense archaeological area that leaves you breathless. And as if that were not enough, it has a welcoming population, a cuisine that blends the Mediterranean and the Orient, astonishing landscapes (desert and seas with unique characteristics), places of religious interest (the three great monotheistic religions have always coexisted here) and cultural harmony. Nor is it a minor point that this is a country enjoying a stable political situation, with a people who support the royal family and monarchs who stand out as intermediaries for peace. It will leave us with a strong desire to return...

In 2007, Petra was declared one of the so-called Seven Wonders of the modern world. Its hidden position, among rocks and sheer cliffs, and the availability of water made the site a favourable place for a city to develop and prosper. The site is accessible only from the north-west, along a narrow mountain path, and from the east through a canyon about 1.5 km long and up to 200 m deep, the Siq: this is the main entrance, which at its narrowest point is just two metres wide. Petra is a city carved into the rock at an altitude of between 800 and 1,396 m above sea level and hidden among the ravines of the mountain; rock and stone are visible at every point of the site. The city’s buildings are largely carved out of polychrome sandstone of the Palaeozoic era, a sedimentary rock produced by the settling and accumulation of tiny grains of sand. The result of this process is a rock that is coherent and resistant, yet at the same time easy to carve. A particular feature of these sandstones is the variation in colour, with shades ranging from ochre yellow to fiery red and white, due to the different concentrations of oxides during the long process of consolidation. These spectacular colour variations are particularly visible on the ceilings of many of Petra’s buildings.
