Description
A visit worth the whole journey: Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world, an unforgettable city carved 2,000 years ago into a sandstone valley, hidden behind the mountain peaks of the south. Its extraordinary architecture and evocative atmosphere leave an indelible impression on the memory of every visitor. Petra lies about 250 km south of Amman, the capital of Jordan, in a basin among the mountains east of the Wadi Araba, the great valley that stretches from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Its Semitic name was Reqem or Raqmu (“the Many-Coloured”), also attested in the Qumran manuscripts. In antiquity it was an Edomite city, then became the capital of the Nabataeans. Around the 8th century it was abandoned by its inhabitants following the decline of trade and natural disasters, and forgotten until modern times. The site was revealed to the Western world by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. Its many buildings, with façades cut directly into the rock,
make it a unique monument, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 6 December 1985. Since 1993 the surrounding area has also been designated an Archaeological National Park.
