Description
The Hong Kong–Macau bridge, the longest sea crossing in the world.
The world's longest sea bridge, linking Hong Kong to Macau and mainland China, was officially opened by President Xi Jinping at a grand inauguration ceremony in the Chinese city of Zhuhai, in Guangdong, on 23 October 2018. At 55 kilometres long, the bridge is described by its champions as an engineering marvel. It also includes a 6.7 km undersea tunnel connected to two artificial islands, and is the second major engineering project linking Hong Kong to China to be inaugurated within the space of a few weeks, after the opening of a high-speed rail link the previous month. Designed to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake, a super typhoon or the impact of a 300,000-tonne cargo ship, it was built using 400,000 tonnes of steel, enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers. The bridge cost around 20 billion dollars in total. It cuts the journey time between Hong Kong and Macau, currently around 4 hours, to about 45 minutes. The project spans a densely populated area of 68 million inhabitants and is part of a highly ambitious plan to strengthen the economy of the entire bay, creating a Greater Bay Area between Hong Kong, Macau and nine other cities in southern China.
