Did you know? Sweden and Denmark are constitutional monarchies in which the royal families, though without influence on political life, exert a strong influence on the cultural life of the two countries.
Culture: the Nobel Prize. The son of an industrialist who manufactured explosives in St Petersburg, Alfred Nobel, drawing on his experience in his father’s company and his own degree in chemistry, invented dynamite by mixing nitroglycerine with diatomaceous earth. On this patent he built his industrial empire and his fortune, part of which he entrusted to a foundation so that, after his death, special prizes would be awarded in the fields of science: physics, science and medicine. To these Nobel chose to add literature (his private passion) and peace as an ideal value. In 1968, at the wish of the Bank of Sweden, the prize for economics was added. The prizes are presented each year by the King of Sweden on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel’s death.
