An enchanted land where the summer sun never sets, or a treasure chest of modern wonders and iconic design? Northern Europe has a thousand faces, which is why a holiday discovering the countries on the Baltic and the North Sea never disappoints and wins over the most diverse travellers.
If you think that “Stockholm is small and boring”, that “Denmark has nothing special about it” or that “the Norwegian fjords, after all, are just rivers”, get ready to change your mind: in this article we reveal some spots to discover that will stay in your heart and experiences you would never expect to have in Northern Europe.
Sweden: an unusual look at Stockholm
Cruising its canals or strolling between its many islands are certainly two of the most classic (and most beautiful) ways to discover this wonderful city. But did you know that you can also take rooftop tours of Stockholm to admire it from above?
And after a day under the clear northern light, when galleries and museums are closing, there is still one art exhibition you can visit for (almost) nothing: just buy a metro ticket and get off at the various stations in the centre, which house art installations, sculptures, paintings and mosaics.
Once your underground tour is over, there will still be time for a drink in Södermalm, one of the trendiest districts in Europe (you read that right!). All you have to do is choose the fashionable bar you like best and raise a glass to your holiday.
Denmark: Malmö and Copenhagen, united by design
A 54-storey skyscraper rising towards the sky as if twisting on itself, its curved surface reflecting the sunlight: we are not in New York but in Malmö, and the building in question is the Turning Torso, famous the world over for its neo-futurist style and designed by one of the greatest star architects, Santiago Calatrava. Design is at home in Northern Europe, and as you wander the streets of central Malmö you will certainly have no trouble coming across a shop selling objects and clothes created by talented emerging designers.
One of the most spectacular bridges in the world, the astonishing Öresund Bridge, which plunges into the sea, links Malmö to the capital, Copenhagen. Here you can enter the oldest amusement park in Europe, the Tivoli Gardens, where the rides are surrounded by lakes, lights and flowers. You will feel as if you were in a film.
Norway: naturally surprising
Nothing can adequately prepare you for the wonder and the sense of peace you feel sailing along the fjords. The Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: as you sail along it, look up to catch sight of the Preikestolen, the Pulpit Rock, from which you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views in Northern Europe. You will see the most daring hikers sitting with their legs dangling over the void, resting after the climb.
Several waterfalls tumble down the fjord’s rock walls, but the one that will surely enchant you is the Seven Sisters waterfall. Legend has it that its seven streams are the tears of seven beautiful, very similar sisters, sad because a princely suitor was never able to tell which of them was his chosen one. If this story has saddened you, don’t worry: an evening among the colours of the Art Nouveau buildings of Ålesund, surrounded by the green of the Norwegian mountains, will bring back your smile.
