Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal means “Crown Palace”, and it is considered one of the most beautiful and fascinating buildings ever constructed. Since 2007 it has been one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and part of its magnetism is due to the legend that surrounds it. The Taj Mahal stands on the banks of the Yamuna river in Agra, in Northern India. It was commissioned by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan, in 1631 in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a princess of noble birth. Mumtaz Mahal died while accompanying her husband to Burhanpur during a campaign to crush a rebellion. She had just given birth to their fourteenth child. Her death was a true tragedy for the emperor, so much so that within a few months his hair and beard turned completely white with grief. While Mumtaz Mahal was still alive, she had asked the emperor to make her four promises should she die before him. The first promise she asked of him was to build the Taj; the second was that he should marry again so as to give their children a new mother; the third was that he would always be kind and understanding towards their children; and the fourth that he would always visit her tomb on the anniversary of her death. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1631 and was completed in 22 years. More than a thousand elephants were probably used to haul the immensely heavy marble and, legend has it, all the workers engaged in the titanic undertaking had their hands amputated once the building was finished, because Shah Jahan wanted the work, which could not be bettered, never to be repeated. The Taj rises on a base of red sandstone topped by an enormous white marble terrace on which rests the famous dome, flanked by four slender minarets. The dome is made of white marble, but its position close to the river creates a magical play of colours that change with the hours of the day and the seasons, giving the Taj Mahal reflections that make it unique yet always different. Like a jewel, the Taj glitters in the moonlight, when the semi-precious stones set into the white marble of the main mausoleum catch the glow of the moon’s rays. The Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines. These changes of colour almost seem to mirror the changing moods of a woman, or so they say in India. To describe it, it would be enough to say that the Taj Mahal is alive, as a monument dedicated to eternal love.
